Purpose
-
It's easy to start adding animations everywhere and overwhelm the user. When this happens animations lose impact.
-
Animate to add context. Try to describe what benefit it provides to the whole experience. The easier this task is, the more context your animation provides.
-
Know when not to animate. Things that a user has to do routinely hundreds of times a day should be instant to avoid being annoying.
-
Incorporate animations that everyone expects, such as enter and exit transitions, and then sprinkle in some very well-crafted ones to add context and delight. However, the quantity must be carefully chosen.
Showcase
The animation here implies a clear relationship between the card and the more detailed view it opens.
This animation explains how v0 works.
Raycast's command menu doesn't use any animation.
In (Basic) Bookmarks, Rauno Freiberg removed animations to make the app feel faster.
